Mother Elephant has been finished for a week or so. She is 14 inches long
and 6.25 inches tall (34 cm x 15.5 cm)
and about 12 ounces of wool from my sheep.
Her legs have no wires in them. They are needle felted very tightly.
Interesting Elephant facts:
The “breasts” of mother elephants are between their front legs.
They are similar to human breasts, not an udder.
Elephant herds consist of a Matriarch, her daughters and their calves.
Males/Bulls live in bachelor herds and join the female herds for breeding only.
These photos show the adolescent calf before I’ve added
the trunk, ears and natural gray skin layer.
The following photos are of the little one finished and the Mother and Calf Duo.
The commission is for three elephants. The third one will be
a new born elephant.
It will start to take shape tomorrow!
I have so much enjoyed working with this client to create
the elephant family trio. She allowed me to choose the poses.
After having studied elephant photos and videos,
I HAD to make two of them touching their trunks.
Elephants are so physically intimate with their herdmates. So caring.

OMG! She is so adorable! I love your elephants!!! I admire your skill creating wild life. When the smallest one is ready, you should take photos outside, somewhere where is similar enviroment as on savannah, please
.
Thanks so much Kirsi!!
I will try to find just the right environment for that kind of a photo and post it here. Great idea!!
WOW. SO impressive.
Thanks, Deb!
You do such lovely work, beautiful !
Thank you, Kim!
I LOVE that. I was wondering…where do you get the wool to make the peocrjts? Is it already all “combed out”? Dont know the correct wording I don’t think. Do you know of any websites that explain pretty well how to do peocrjts like that.?Lexie.
I send my wool out to be washed and carded (“combed”). If you do a google search of needle felting techniques, you might find what you’re looking for. I have a video on the home page here that gives a tiny intro.
Thanks!
Laura
Your work is amazing, so talented!!! Everything is great, but I especially love the ears on the baby.
Thanks so much Shannon! It’s amazing how different baby elephants’ ears are from adults. I’ve learned so much about elephants!
